WordPress is a wonderful content management system. I have been using it for 10 years more or less, and I have built all sorts of websites using it, from blogs to business sites and online apps.
That being said, getting an ecommerce site running out of WordPress is not so simple. You have two main options to make your life easier: you can either use a plugin, but those tend to be complex, or use a theme that is already optmized for some ecommerce plataform.
