Video Marketing How-To: 8 Fast Tips for Testing Your Video Before Publishing

Hello, and welcome to another episode of Video Marketing How-To! This week we want to really quickly run through eight tips for testing your video before sharing it with the world.

  1. Test on multiple browsers — what works in Firefox, may not work the same way in Chrome or Internet Explorer.
  2. Deploy on a back-end site first so you can verify that everything works.
  3. Test on multiple devices — iPhones and Android devices render things differently.
  4. Test your Calls-to-Action or YouTube annotations to make sure they link to the right place.
  5. Ensure you have proper tracking in place, whether you’re using UTM tags or otherwise, to make sure you can track these clicks back to your video.
  6. Test your form submits and tagging — there’s nothing worse than launching a campaign only to discover the leads didn’t go where they were supposed to!
  7. For big campaigns, run your video past a few other people on your team. You’re never going to notice every detail, and a fresh set of eyes may catch something you didn’t.
  8. Ensure your content works on social — if someone shares your video, will that work properly?

Obviously the list of things you should be testing depends on how you build your campaigns, but hopefully this short list is helpful info for getting your next video campaign right. Thanks for watching, and stay tuned in another few weeks for another episode!

Aragon Research Names Vidyard ‘Hot Vendor’ in Enterprise Video

KITCHENER, Ontario – May 5, 2016 – Aragon Research today named Vidyard, the video intelligence platform for business, a Hot Vendor in Enterprise Video for 2016 for its ability to personalize unique video content for each individual viewer and track detailed viewer engagement analytics within leading marketing automation, CRM and enterprise collaboration solutions.

Aragon also recognized Vidyard for its complete platform offering video content management, online delivery, video analytics and live video capabilities.

“Vidyard is hot because of its ability to customize videos in a similar way to how emails are customized for mass marketing. While this is a new capability, we expect it to become more sophisticated over time.” (Aragon Research, Hot Vendors in Enterprise Video, Jim Lundy, April 20 2016)

As Aragon noted in the report, video is becoming the dominant form of content because it makes consuming information faster. Video is becoming an integral component of the workplace, but technical limitations of networks, end points and video providers have gotten in the way of video execution. That is changing as vendors get stronger and technology simplifies processes. Aragon predicts that by the end of 2018, editing a video will be as easy as editing a text document.

“There is no doubt video has arrived,” said Tyler Lessard, chief marketing officer at Vidyard. “It is now the preferred communication medium for nearly every business function and for good reason. Audiences can interact with video in ways they can’t with text, and those interactions can be measured down to the second to provide incredible insight into the engagement patterns of different individuals and the effectiveness of different pieces of content.”

Already the first video platform to offer comprehensive integrations with Marketo, Salesforce, Oracle and other marketing and sales technologies, Vidyard provides personalized video as well as integrated video live streaming for B2B and B2C businesses. Companies such as Lenovo, Honeywell, LinkedIn, Cision, BMC Software and Citibank rely on Vidyard for their video marketing and analytics needs.

Aragon Research does not endorse vendors, or their products or services that are referenced in its research publications, and does not advise users to select those vendors that are rated the highest. Aragon Research publications consist of the opinions of Aragon Research and Advisory Services organization and should not be construed as statements of fact. Aragon Research provides its research publications and the information contained in them “AS IS,” without warranty of any kind.

How to Write on the Go with Cloud Storage

Writing on the go is a favorite of many professional writers. Those who like to spice things up will know that the best way of doing that is to zone out in extremely hectic areas. That’s why writing in a coffee shop is often very effective: your brain functions at peak efficiency once you get a change of scenery.

Yet, how does cloud storage come into play? Believe it or not, you need the cloud in order to write anytime, anywhere.

Spreading words upon a white canvas is far more complicated than some would think. You have to twist the phrases to best convey what your mind makes up. You have to keep in mind the reader, the writer, and, let’s face it, Google as well.

Why not take your tablet out and go write in the coffee place downstairs?

Step 1: Always Save Your Files to the Cloud

There are a lot of cloud services for writers that work incredibly well. Browsing through these tools will help you find the right platform to suit your needs. Most of them have respective Android and iOS apps. All you have to do is install their desktop apps or use their online platform to save your articles to the cloud. And the best part is that you only need a free cloud storage account to do this.

If you’re going to use Dropbox. Dropbox is a very useful tool for writers. The track changes features makes it incredibly easy for the supervisor to see what team members are working on. Installing Dropbox is recommended since you will have instant access to it from your file explorer. Do this for all the devices you usually use for writing. You can read here a

If you’re going to use Google Drive. Google Drive is slightly friendlier for writers because you don’t need absolutely anything else to continue your writing. You simply have to leave your files inside the Drive and you’ll be able to edit the documents directly with the Google Drive document viewer.

For any other clouds. If you’re planning on using some different type of cloud storage service, such as OneDrive (another great free cloud storage service), it’s advisable to make sure that your devices have the necessary app and that they can read the documents that you’re using for writing.

Step 2: Writing on the Go

Now it’s time for the actual writing process. For this you need to secure the following things:

-A good place to write. Find a spot where you think you’ll be able to concentrate. The greatest advantage of using cloud storage when writing is the freedom it provides. Write from a coffee shop, a public library, a public park, or even from home.

-A small and easy-to-carry device. For this, you can use a small laptop, your MacBook, iPad or your Android tablet. We don’t recommend writing on your phone. For professional writing, use professional tools.

-A really good keyboard. If you choose to work on an iPad or Android tablet, my personal favorite, you need to get a good compatible keyboard. You can choose whichever you want, as long as you make sure that it suits your writing style and your fingers.

-All the necessary apps up and running. Double check that you have the cloud storage app installed. The documents you work with on a daily basis should work properly. We recommend installing Microsoft Word for Android or iOS.

Step 3: Uploading to WordPress

What happens when you finish your post and you’re still sitting so cozily in that armchair at the corner cafĂ©, gently jiving to that background West-side jazz? You do need to post the article, but no worries! Here’s how to make sure you don’t have to get up from your chair (make sure you do this steps before you go out to write):

-Download the WordPress app. Yep! There’s an app for everything these days. There are even two versions, for Android and for iOS respectively. Be sure to complete the installation properly.

-Add your blog to the app. This one’s easy. If you already have your blog linked with your WordPress.com account, you should see it pop up on the screen of your tablet.

-Post your article. Now, we’ll admit, editing your article prior to posting it is a bit more difficult on the mobile version of WordPress, but it will work. As long as your typical plugins are not too complicated, you should have no problem. Both All-in-One SEO and Yoast SEO work fine.

-Optimize your website for mobile devices. In order to see how your blog post looks, you need to have your device optimized for mobile devices. Check out how to do this over here.

Important: We don’t recommend writing your post directly into the WordPress Android or iOS app. In fact, we strongly advise against this. Many reviewers have complained about losing everything they’ve written when the screen timed out. We don’t have to tell you how frustrating this could be.

Do you like writing on the go? Now cloud storage can make your dream of keeping all your whimsical ideas alive! Never forget a brilliant line ever again. Pen it on a blank page and send it to the clouds!

As a tech-savvy and freelance writer, Christopher spends his time reading, researching, and writing about everything worth knowing in the digital age. He is always up to date with the newest gadgets and strives to share his knowledge of what’s the top app to use. His efforts can be noted on CloudStorage101.com where he keeps himself in the know with what are the best storage services online.

Google AMP for WordPress

Are you looking to improve the mobile browsing experience on your blog?

Have you heard of Google AMP, but you’re not sure what it is or how to make it work for you?

In this post, I’ll walk you through what Google AMP is, why it’s important, and what it can do for your blog. I also address some major concerns that bloggers need to be aware of.

Understanding the Problem

The mobile web isn’t giving the average user the kind of browsing experience that they want. It’s slow. Pages take a long time to load, and ads and pop-ups just don’t work as well as they should.

This is a big deal, because people navigate away from slow-loading pages. Kissmetrics did a study where they found that 40% of people leave a page that hasn’t loaded after three seconds.

Just let that sink in.

If it takes longer than three-Mississippi for your page to load, you’ve potentially lost 40% of your visitors. That’s huge.

In addition, lots of people have installed ad blockers to make their mobile browsing experience easier. That’s bad news for you if you’re using ads on your site.

Facebook, Apple, and Google know that these are big problems. And they also know that if they can control mobile browsing, they’re in a really powerful position. So they want to be part of the solution to the mobile web problem.

I’ll do podcasts in the future about Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News, but today we’re going to focus on Google AMP.

What is Google AMP?

AMP stands for Accelerate Mobile Pages. The AMP Project is an open-source initiative that’s being built in collaboration with a bunch of different partners. Its goal is to improve the mobile web browsing experience.

Once you set up AMP on your site, your pages will load an average of four times faster. In some cases, your content will also use up to ten times less data. That means your pages load so fast, it almost looks like they’re appearing instantly. And that makes everyone much happier.

AMP Project

AMP Project

How Does It Work?

AMP helps your pages to load faster in a few different ways. It’s not the same as a “responsive” site. Instead, it’s a second version of your site (assuming you’re using WordPress) that loads differently. Essentially, the AMP version of your site is a normal HTML website with some restrictions and some added extras.

Google Amp

Google Amp

First of all, it gets rid of additional, “unnecessary” scripts. Plugins and features add scripts to your site. These scripts can slow it down, especially on a mobile device. AMP decides that these extra elements are “unnecessary” and stops them from appearing so that your content will load faster.

Secondly, every AMP page has the same dimensions. Normally, the dimensions for a site are embedded in its code. Your browser will read the code in order to find out the dimensions and adjust appropriately. With AMP, the browser already knows what the dimensions of the page will be because they are always the same. It doesn’t have to check the code, so your page loads faster.

Finally, AMP takes advantage of “lazy loading.” Basically, it prioritizes the content and loads what you need to see first, first. So if you have a bunch of images at the top of a page and a bunch of images at the bottom, AMP will load the stuff at the top first. This helps it seem like the page has loaded instantly!

The Technical Stuff

There are three elements that make up the AMP Project.

Tools You'll Need

Tools You’ll Need

1. AMP HTML

Every website that you see on the internet is a result of HTML. It’s a specific type of coding that allows your browser to display content. AMP HTML is basically a modified version of HTML that is optimized for mobile browsing.

2. AMP JS

AMP Javascript or JS handles the resource loading, or the “lazy loading” that I mentioned before.

3. Goolge AMP cache and Google CDN

Google takes advantage of these elements to speed up page loading. Caching basically saves some of the scripts from any site you visit within your browser so that it will be easier to reload that page when you return to it. CDN stands for Content Delivery Network, and Google has a huge one. If I want to load your page, but I’m in Michigan and you’re in France, it’s much faster to load the page from a server that’s closer to me. A CDN helps to make that happen.

These three things together deliver a significantly faster browsing experience.

Pros and Cons of Using Google AMP

Of course, there are benefits and drawbacks to AMP. Here’s what I think so far:

Preferential Treatment from Google

Preferential Treatment from Google

Benefits

1. This one’s obvious: your pages will be quicker to load. It’s so fast, it’ll look like they have appeared instantly.

2. Fewer people will abandon your site. Remember the Kissmetric study? Faster loading means more people will stick around to see your content, and that’s a very good thing.

3. Google is giving preferential treatment to AMP sites. You can see this in action on your mobile device in the Google Chrome browser. This works best for news sites at the moment, so I used Donald Trump for the podcast since he’s in the news a lot right now. Open up your Chrome browser and search for “Donald Trump”.

When your search results load, you’ll see a set of “Top Stories” at the top of the page, before the normal search results. If you look at the bottom left-hand corner of each of these Top Stories, you’ll see a lightning bolt symbol and “AMP.” This is how you know that these sites have set up AMP.

Think about what that means: AMP sites are appearing in a separate Top Stories section before the normal search results. Google is prioritizing them.

Now, this only seems to be happening for news sites so far. But in the future, it could be you getting preferential treatment from Google. So it’s really important to pay attention to this, especially if a lot of your traffic comes from Google.

4. Social networks like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest have said that they will support AMP. We don’t know exactly what that means yet, but setting up AMP for your site could mean that these social networks give you preferential treatment in the future, too.

Concerns
Concerns

Concerns

1. Your branding is gone. Branding is such an essential part of what you do online, but AMP doesn’t allow for it unless you do some advanced customization and work on the code yourself.

2. The sidebar is gone. This is kind of a big deal if you do important advertising in your sidebar or if, like me, you have a big opt-in form in your sidebar.

3. You’re restricted in terms of what you can add to the site. For example, there are no comments on an AMP version of your WordPress post. That’s a loss of functionality.

This also means that your social sharing buttons will disappear. Now, I have seen these on some AMP sites, so it is possible to add them in if you can do more advanced customization. This tells me that there will be more and more options and features coming for AMP in the future. But for now, just be aware that not all of your plugins will work with AMP.

What Are the Implications?

Focus on Content

Focus on Content

It’s better to be proactive than reactive.

Focus on the content. For the AMP version of your website, the sidebar is gone, the ads are gone, the pop-ups are gone. This means that you’ve got to pay attention to story-selling or narrative-selling rather than interruption marketing.

If you’ve got some important products advertised in a banner ad or a sidebar or a pop-up, start thinking about how to incorporate those products into your content. From what I can see, the future of the mobile web is going to force us to think more about content even in our monetization and our business models.

How Do I Set It Up?

Google Amp Tutorial

If you want to try out Google AMP for yourself, it’s relatively easy to set it up on WordPress. I’ve also created a free, step-by-step tutorial for you called A WordPress User’s Guide to Google AMP. You can get it by clicking on the links at the top and bottom of this post.

You’ll need to install two plugins on your WordPress site. The first one is AMP.

Search “AMP” in the plugins directory. You’re looking for the Google AMP plugin created by Automattic. Once you install that, your site has AMP enabled. Easy!
The AMP plugin is very bare bones. If you want to customize, you’ll need another plugin. I use one called Facebook Instant Articles and Google AMP by PageFrog. You can find it by just searching “PageFrog.”

Once you’ve installed that plugin, you’ll have a lot more control over the look and feel of your AMP site. I’m so much happier with the AMP version of my site since using PageFrog!

If you want to use Google Analytics for your AMP site, Google recommends that you set up a separate property. You can do this from your Analytics admin page.

To check that AMP is working, just go to any recent post and add “/amp” at the end of the URL. You can do this on becomeablogger.com, too, if you want to see what it looks like. You should see a simplified version of the page, stripped down to just the content.

Conclusion

Big changes are coming to mobile web browsing, so consider this your wake-up call.

You need to pay attention to AMP because it will affect all publishers eventually. Like I said, it’s much better to be proactive than reactive. If you can get ahead of the curve now, you’ll be in a much better position down the road.

Go out and explore the resources. It’s not enough to listen to what people say about AMP. Try it out. It might not work for you, and that’s fine! But at least you’ll be making an informed decision.

Digital Con-Men: Threats from Social Engineering

From snake-oil salesmen to over-the-phone crooks, con-men have manipulated the habits, behaviors and emotions of people to capture their attention, information and money. These days a new type of con artist has risen to prominence. Digital con-man, online fraudster, techno-crook. This type of criminal goes by many names, but the one thing they do have in common is that they utilise meticulous social engineering to worm their way into the lives of their victims.

Instead of using brute force hacks and tactics, these fraudsters use subtle methods to make you part with key pieces of information and hard earned money. Instead of attacking your digital system they go after your ability to discern friend from foe. If you ever received an email from a “Nigerian Prince” looking to share some of his wealth with you, then you’ve seen a digital con-man in action. “I’d never fall for something like that”, you may say. But many have, and it has become such a problem that Foreign Agencies such as Interpol have a dedicated taskforce for these types scammers.

Social engineering attacks are not limited to the Nigerian Prince scam or those like it. Other types of attacks like phishing involve impersonating family or friends and then asking the victim to lend them some money. Many a grandparent has fallen prey to this, believing that they are sending money to a grandchild that is in dire financial straits. Criminals will use email addresses that appear very similar to the legitimate email, or they may just hack the family members email account outright.

Along the same lines, digital con-men prey on people’s niceness and willingness to help by pretending that they are a charity and are looking for donations or to raise funds for some cause. But, once the victim enters their credit card information to make the donation, the digital fraudster will run off with the card information and either use it or turn around and sell it on the digital black market.

Baiting schemes, in particular, depend on correctly reading the tendencies of their victims in order for them to be successful. Unlike other scams which are proactive in asking for money or information from the victim, this scheme uses “baits” – content, often downloadable, that users covet or want. Once the content has been downloaded onto the victim’s device a trojan or worm is usually activated and will start uploading information from the device.

The types of schemes and attacks are numerous. The tactics and strategies of these criminals are ever changing as well. However, one thing they all have in common is they require the victim to make quick, irrational decisions. A lot of these scams can be foiled by simply slowing down, reading everything thoroughly, fact checking and actually engaging the person who you think the email is coming from. Does your child or grandchild need that money right now? Does Brian from the Accounts Department really want me to send £25,000 to that bank account number? I’m sure that a quick phone call to them will not hurt. Does that free download seem too good to be true? Most likely it is but perhaps it’s not. At the very least run it through a couple layers of anti-virus before installing.

3 Ways to Squeeze More From Your Marketing Automation

Let’s face it: your marketing automation system is hungry. It’s hungry for leads, and information on those leads. All. The. Time.

That’s why you’re feeding it demographic information to build out stronger persona profiles, and why you’re watching every move your prospects make on your website and what content they’re consuming. Or … almost every move.

Are you tracking engagement with video at an individual prospect level?

Cream of the crop marketers are. They’re adding video to their marketing automation platform. It makes a lot of sense since video is the preferred content medium for today’s buyers and they’re consuming so much of it.

What Do We Mean by “Adding Video to Marketing Automation”?

I know you’re not supposed to answer a question with a question, but I’m gonna break the rules. Here’s my question back to you: How many of your leads have watched your video content? Or, do you know how many minutes they’ve consumed in total? Or what parts of certain videos they’ve re-watched.

With video data synced to your marketing automation platform, you’d know.

Maybe this just seems like a nice-to-have at first glance. I’m telling you, it’s more of a necessity. Audiences are consuming significant amounts of video in their path to purchase, as in more than 30 minutes worth. So even if only 25% of your buyers’ total research was done with video content (which is a low estimate, by the way), you’re missing a huge part of that research picture. And missing this means that you’re not able to identify high-quality leads that are consuming a lot of video content or tailor follow-up nurtures to topics related to the videos they’ve watched.

This is a paint-by-numbers competition and you’re missing the paint for numbers 7 through 10.

3 Ways to Use Video to Get More Out of Marketing Automation

Get the Guide

What I’m saying is, with video data synced to your marketing automation system, you can now paint the full picture. And it will be beautiful.

How to Incorporate Video in Marketing Automation

There’s actually a lot more to the perfect pairing of video and marketing automation than a clearer picture of your leads’ interest. Beyond better understanding your prospects, here are 6 opportunities where video will help you get more out of your marketing automation platform:

  • Generating more leads: when your video platform is synced with your marketing automation system, you can use video to generate leads through in-video email gates, full forms, and CTAs.
  • Better scoring and qualifying of leads: Scoring leads based on what video topics they’ve consumed, where those videos fit in the funnel, and how many total minutes they’ve watched will help you better understand your prospects’ interest and their propensity to buy.
  • Capturing more attention with personalized video content: Using the data already available in your marketing automation platform, you can create personalized experiences through the medium your buyers’ are craving (psst … it’s video). Adding their name, position, company, right into the video will help grab more attention and hold it longer.
  • Better engagement with more targeted nurturing: A clearer picture of what your prospects are interested in means you can offer even more accurate and targeted nurtures to help move buyers closer to purchase.

Top 6 Ways to Generate More Mileage from Your Content

There are triggers that are guaranteed to make your content perform well on the web. In the online world, there are several million pieces of content added each day to the already billion pages of content that already exists on the web. In order for your content to stand out, it needs to have compelling elements that will allow it to break through the noise. Most web marketers struggle to execute this with their campaign.

Deliver content for a specific audience.

By addressing a core topic for a specific audience, your content will have a much better chance of gaining traction on the web. Don’t try to develop a content piece that appeals to everybody. Instead, find out the needs, wants, desires, problems, frustrations and fantasies of a specific audience group. For example, WordPress developers that want to use plugins that will improve their website’s performance. Or basketball players that want to know how they can improve their vertical leap ability.

Use compelling headlines.

Powerful headlines should be used to sell your content to the audience. They need to sell the worthiness of the content to be clicked, liked and shared on the web. Epic content will fall short if the headline fails to convince a potential viewer to engage with it. Upworthy content writers are required to write 25 headlines before publishing their content. As a result, they create unique and compelling headlines that allows their content to perform well across the web.

Use compelling images.

People love to engage with image content. The featured image that you use for your content can double the amount of traffic to your website. When the content is supported by more compelling images, it will create more opportunities for your content to get liked and shared across the web. Spend time creating good quality images that have a high-resolution and that tell a compelling story to your audience.

Make sure your content delivers value.

No matter what type of content you publish, it must deliver value for your target audience. Take the time to support your content with value by providing:

-Quotes from credible sources.
-Statistics from primary sources such as surveys.
-Embedding valuable content such as infographics, videos or audio files.
-Linking to other credible websites that support your content.

Keep your content interesting by telling a story.

People love stories. So it is important that you find an angle that will allow you to develop a compelling story for your content. Consider telling a story that:

-Captures the human-interest angle.
-Highlights major announcements.
-Marks the passage of time (such as a 5, 10 or 25 year anniversary)
-Reacts to a current story, event or trend.
-Solves a problem.
-Is honest.

Promote your content on platforms where your target audience hangs out.

Implementing the right promotional strategy will allow your content to gain exposure, traffic and shares from your target audience. It is important that you identify where your audience hangs out online. Some methods for finding your audience online include:

-Searching for discussion threads on forums.
-Searching for question and answer websites like Quora for relevant discussion -topics.
-Searching for blog posts and adding to the commentary.
-Searching for topic groups on social media platforms.
-Searching for influencers on blogs, media or social media platforms and sharing -the content with them.

You can even use tools like BuzzSumo or Buzzstream to find people that have engaged with similar content and promote your content directly to them.

These are proven methods that will get your content likes and shares across the web. Amplify your website’s content by implementing these tactics today!
